Leading Question
Category: Rhetoric

What is it?

A leading question is phrased in a way that suggests a desired answer. It's different from a loaded question because it doesn't contain a hidden assumption, but it does try to steer the respondent.

Examples

"You didn't see any problems with the plan, did you?"

"Wouldn't you agree that this is the best option?"

How to Avoid This

Ask neutral, open-ended questions that don't suggest an answer. Instead of 'You liked the movie, right?', ask 'What did you think of the movie?'

How to Counter This

Be aware that you are being led. You can answer the question in your own words, rather than just agreeing or disagreeing. 'Actually, I did have some concerns about the plan.' You can also rephrase the question to make it more neutral.
