Weasel Words
Category: Rhetorical Device
What is it?
Weasel words are terms that seem to make a strong claim but actually leave room for backtracking or denial. They create an impression of conveying information while being vague enough to avoid commitment or accountability.
Examples
'Studies suggest that this product may help improve your health.'
'Some experts believe that this approach could potentially lead to better outcomes.'
How to Avoid This
Be specific and clear in your claims. If you're referring to research or expert opinions, cite specific sources and be precise about what they actually found or stated.
How to Counter This
Ask for specifics: 'Which studies exactly? What were their findings? How significant were the results? Who conducted them?'
