Vivid Imagery
Category: Rhetoric
What is it?
Vivid imagery uses descriptive language to appeal to the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch). It can make writing more engaging and memorable, and can be a powerful tool of persuasion.
Examples
"The old house stood on a hill overlooking the sea, its windows like vacant eyes staring out at the grey, churning water."
"The smell of freshly baked bread filled the warm kitchen."
How to Avoid This
Vivid imagery is a good thing in many types of writing. You don't need to avoid it. However, be aware of how it can be used to evoke emotions and potentially bypass rational thought.
How to Counter This
Enjoy the imagery, but don't let it distract you from the substance of the argument. You can appreciate the beautiful language while still critically evaluating the claims being made.
