What is it?
This is a classification for claims that are difficult to categorize as either purely factual or purely opinion. They may contain elements of both, or be ambiguous in a way that makes classification difficult.
Examples
"The new policy is a disaster for the economy." (Is 'disaster' a verifiable state or a judgment?)
"He is the most influential artist of his generation." (Can 'influential' be objectively measured?)
How to Avoid This
For clarity in your own arguments, try to separate factual statements from opinion-based judgments. If a claim is a mix, be clear about which parts are verifiable and which are subjective.
How to Counter This
When encountering such a claim, you can break it down. Ask for the evidence for the factual parts and question the basis for the opinion parts. 'What are the specific economic effects you'd point to, and what is your standard for calling it a disaster?'
