Understatement/Minimization
Category: Rhetoric
What is it?
Understatement is the opposite of hyperbole. It involves deliberately downplaying the significance of something. It can be used for ironic or humorous effect, or to mislead.
Examples
After winning the lottery, saying, 'I'm a little better off financially now.'
Describing a major disaster as 'a bit of a setback'.
How to Avoid This
Describe things accurately. Don't minimize serious problems or downplay significant achievements (unless you are intentionally trying to be humorous or modest).
How to Counter This
If someone is using understatement to mislead, you can point out the true scale of the issue. 'You call it 'a bit of a setback', but this has been a major disaster for the community.' This brings the conversation back to reality.
