Simile
Category: Rhetoric
What is it?
A simile is a comparison between two unlike things using the words 'like' or 'as'. It is a common literary device used to make writing more vivid and descriptive.
Examples
"He is as strong as an ox."
"The water was as clear as crystal."
How to Avoid This
Similes are a normal part of language. You don't need to avoid them. However, avoid clichés (overused similes) if you want your writing to be fresh and original.
How to Counter This
A simile is not an argument, so it doesn't need to be countered. You can, however, question the appropriateness of the comparison if it is being used to make a misleading point.
