Repetition
Category: Rhetorical Device

What is it?

Repetition involves repeating words, phrases, or ideas to create emphasis or emotional impact. While it can be effective for memorability and persuasion, it can also substitute for substantive arguments or evidence.

Examples

'We need change. Change in our policies. Change in our priorities. Change in our leadership.'

'This product is innovative, innovative in its design, innovative in its functionality, innovative in every way.'

How to Avoid This

Use repetition sparingly and ensure you're also providing substantive content. Ask whether you're repeating for clarity or just for emotional effect.

How to Counter This

Acknowledge the repetition but ask for substance: 'I understand you're emphasizing this point, but can you provide specific evidence or reasoning to support it?'
