Potentially Misleading Implication/Spin
Category: Rhetoric

What is it?

Spin is a form of propaganda that involves presenting information in a way that is favorable to one's own position. The facts may be true, but they are framed in a way that is designed to mislead.

Examples

A politician who has cut funding for a program might say, 'We are streamlining the program to make it more efficient.'

A company that has laid off workers might say, 'We are rightsizing our workforce to meet the challenges of the modern economy.'

How to Avoid This

Be transparent and direct. Don't try to hide bad news behind positive-sounding language. Present the facts in a neutral and unbiased way.

How to Counter This

Look for the facts behind the spin. Rephrase the statement in more neutral terms. 'So, when you say you are 'streamlining' the program, does that mean you are cutting its budget?'
