Overly Broad/Generalized Claim
Category: Claim

What is it?

This type of claim makes a broad statement about a group or topic that is unlikely to be true in all cases. It ignores exceptions and nuances, leading to a distorted view of reality.

Examples

"All politicians are corrupt."

"You never listen to me."

How to Avoid This

Qualify your statements. Instead of 'all', use 'many' or 'some'. Provide specific examples rather than making sweeping generalizations. Acknowledge that there are exceptions to most rules.

How to Counter This

Provide a counterexample that disproves the generalization. For instance, if someone says 'All politicians are corrupt,' you can name a politician who is widely regarded as honest. This forces the other person to qualify their statement.
