Opinion
Category: Claim

What is it?

An opinion is a subjective statement that reflects the views of the person who makes it. It cannot be proven true or false in the same way a factual claim can. It is based on personal judgment or belief.

Examples

"Chocolate is the best flavor of ice cream."

"The new law is a step in the right direction for our country."

How to Avoid This

When stating an opinion, it is good practice to signal that it is your personal view, for example, by using phrases like 'I believe' or 'In my opinion'. Don't present opinions as if they are established facts.

How to Counter This

You can't 'disprove' an opinion, but you can disagree with it and provide your own opinion with supporting reasons. You can also challenge the underlying values or assumptions that the opinion is based on.
