OAEF
Category: Rhetoric

What is it?

OAEF stands for 'Opinion as Fact'. It occurs when someone states their personal belief as if it were a proven fact, without using phrases like 'I think' or 'in my view'. This can be misleading to the audience.

Examples

"This is the best movie of the year."

"The only way to solve this problem is to lower taxes."

How to Avoid This

Clearly distinguish between fact and opinion in your own communication. Use subjective markers when you are expressing your own beliefs or judgments.

How to Counter This

Point out that the statement is an opinion, not a fact. 'That's your opinion, but others might disagree. What evidence do you have to support your view?'
