OAEF: Speculative Assertion
Category: Rhetoric

What is it?

This is a specific type of 'Opinion as Fact' where the opinion is about a future or hypothetical event. It's a prediction or speculation that is stated with unwarranted certainty.

Examples

"If we elect this candidate, the economy will collapse."

"This new technology will solve all of our problems."

How to Avoid This

When making predictions, use cautious language. 'This might lead to...' or 'It's possible that...' Acknowledge the uncertainty of the future.

How to Counter This

Question the certainty of the prediction. 'How can you be so sure that will happen? What other outcomes are possible?' Point out that it is speculation, not a fact.
