Minimizers
Category: Loaded Language
What is it?
Minimizers are words or phrases that downplay or reduce the perceived severity, importance, or certainty of a claim. They can make significant issues seem trivial or dismiss legitimate concerns without addressing them substantively.
Examples
'There were just a few minor issues with the product.'
'The environmental impact is merely a small concern compared to economic benefits.'
How to Avoid This
Avoid dismissive language when addressing legitimate concerns. Acknowledge the actual significance of issues rather than automatically downplaying them.
How to Counter This
Challenge the minimization: 'You're characterizing this as 'minor,' but let's look at the actual impact and significance of these issues.'
