Metaphor
Category: Rhetoric
What is it?
A metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things without using 'like' or 'as'. It can be a powerful tool for explaining complex ideas and making writing more vivid.
Examples
"The world is a stage."
"Argument is war."
How to Avoid This
Metaphors are a key part of language. You don't need to avoid them, but be aware of the implications of the metaphors you use. A poorly chosen metaphor can be confusing or misleading.
How to Counter This
You can challenge a metaphor by pointing out the ways in which the comparison is not accurate. 'You say argument is war, but unlike in war, no one has to get hurt in an argument. We can both win if we find a good solution.'
