Metaphor
Category: Rhetorical Device

What is it?

A metaphor compares one thing to another, suggesting they share qualities. While metaphors can help explain complex concepts, they can also frame issues in ways that lead to particular conclusions by highlighting certain aspects and obscuring others.

Examples

'The war on drugs' (framing drug policy as a military conflict)

'The economy is a well-oiled machine' (suggesting mechanical predictability)

How to Avoid This

Be aware of the metaphors you use and how they might shape thinking. Consider whether your metaphors highlight the most relevant aspects of the issue.

How to Counter This

Identify the metaphor and its limitations: 'That metaphor emphasizes X aspect but doesn't account for Y aspect, which is also important.'
