Meme
Category: Rhetoric

What is it?

Memes are a form of cultural shorthand used in online communication. They can be a quick and witty way to make a point, but they can also be exclusionary if the audience doesn't understand the reference.

Examples

Using the 'distracted boyfriend' meme format to comment on a situation.

"One does not simply walk into Mordor."

How to Avoid This

Use memes only when you are sure your audience will understand them. In formal or professional communication, it's best to avoid them entirely.

How to Counter This

If you don't understand a meme, it's okay to ask for an explanation. Memes are not arguments, so they don't need to be 'countered' in a logical sense. You can, however, question the point that the meme is being used to make.
