Loaded Language: Pejorative/Negative
Category: Rhetoric

What is it?

This is a type of loaded language that uses negative words to create an unfavorable impression. It's often used in attacks and criticisms.

Examples

"That's a ridiculous and idiotic idea."

"The corrupt and incompetent government has failed us again."

How to Avoid This

Criticize ideas, not people. When you disagree with something, explain why in a calm and rational way, without resorting to insults or negative labels.

How to Counter This

Don't get drawn into a slanging match. Ignore the insults and focus on the substance of the issue. 'Instead of using insults, can we discuss the actual merits of the idea?'
