Labeling
Category: Loaded Language

What is it?

Labeling applies a loaded term to a person, group, or idea in a way that categorizes them and often carries implicit judgments. Labels can oversimplify complex positions and create stigma without engaging with substantive arguments.

Examples

'These climate alarmists are trying to destroy our economy.'

'He's just another socialist pushing big government.'

How to Avoid This

Describe specific positions or actions rather than applying broad labels. Engage with the substance of arguments rather than categorizing the people making them.

How to Counter This

Ask for specifics: 'Rather than using that label, could you address the specific policy proposals they're advocating?'
