False Binary
Category: Fallacy

What is it?

Also known as a false dilemma or either/or fallacy, this tactic simplifies a complex issue into two opposing sides, forcing a choice between them and ignoring other possibilities.

Examples

"You're either with us or against us."

"We can either raise taxes or cut public services. There is no other way."

How to Avoid This

When considering an issue, brainstorm multiple options. Avoid thinking in black-and-white terms. Acknowledge the complexity of the situation.

How to Counter This

Point out that there are other options. 'It's not just a choice between A and B. We could also consider C, D, or a combination of approaches.' By providing other alternatives, you expose the false dilemma.
