Exaggeration/Hyperbole
Category: Rhetoric
What is it?
Hyperbole is a figure of speech that involves deliberate exaggeration for effect. It's not meant to be taken literally, but to create a strong impression.
Examples
"I'm so hungry I could eat a horse."
"This is the worst day of my life."
How to Avoid This
In factual or formal writing, avoid hyperbole. Stick to accurate descriptions. In creative or persuasive writing, it can be an effective tool, but be aware that it can also make you seem less credible if overused.
How to Counter This
If hyperbole is being used in a serious argument, you can point out the exaggeration. 'I know you're frustrated, but is it really the 'worst day of your life'?' This can bring the conversation back to a more realistic level.
