Dysphemism
Category: Loaded Language

What is it?

A dysphemism is the opposite of a euphemism—it substitutes a harsher, more offensive expression for a neutral or positive one. Dysphemisms are often used to express contempt or to paint something in a negative light.

Examples

'Tax collectors are bloodsuckers draining our economy.'

'He's just a pencil-pusher' (instead of 'administrative worker')

How to Avoid This

Use neutral language when discussing people, groups, or concepts you disagree with. Focus on substantive criticisms rather than derogatory labels.

How to Counter This

Point out the loaded language: 'That's a very charged way to describe tax collection. Could we use more neutral terms to discuss this issue?'
