Causal Leap/Non Sequitur
Category: Fallacy

What is it?

A non sequitur is a conclusion that doesn't logically follow from the previous statement. The premises might be true, but the conclusion drawn from them is not.

Examples

"The sky is blue, and I like blue, so we should go for a walk."

"She is a great singer, so she would make an excellent president."

How to Avoid This

Make sure your conclusions are logically connected to your premises. Check your reasoning to see if there are any gaps or leaps in logic.

How to Counter This

Point out the logical gap between the premise and the conclusion. 'I don't see how her singing ability relates to her qualifications for president. Can you explain the connection?'
