Bandwagon
Category: Rhetorical Device

What is it?

The bandwagon approach encourages people to think or act in a certain way because 'everyone else is doing it.' It appeals to the desire to conform and be part of the majority, rather than providing substantive reasons for the action or belief.

Examples

'Nine out of ten consumers choose our brand. Shouldn't you?'

'All the successful businesses are adopting this strategy. Don't get left behind!'

How to Avoid This

Make decisions based on the merits of the action or belief itself, not on its popularity. Consider whether you would still take the action if you were the only one doing it.

How to Counter This

Ask for reasons beyond popularity: 'Instead of telling me how many people are doing this, can you explain why it's actually beneficial?'
