Appeal to Fear
Category: Rhetorical Device
What is it?
An appeal to fear is a rhetorical device that attempts to influence people by arousing fear or anxiety rather than by using logical reasoning. It often exaggerates risks or presents worst-case scenarios as likely outcomes.
Examples
'If we don't act now, our entire way of life could be destroyed.'
'Without this security system, your family could be at risk from violent home invasions.'
How to Avoid This
Present realistic assessments of risks based on evidence. Discuss both the likelihood and severity of potential outcomes rather than focusing only on worst-case scenarios.
How to Counter This
Ask for evidence about the actual probability of the feared outcome: 'What evidence suggests that outcome is likely rather than just possible?'
