Ad Hominem: Tu Quoque
Category: Fallacy
What is it?
Tu quoque (Latin for 'you too') is a fallacy where someone deflects criticism by accusing the other person of the same thing. It's a way of avoiding having to respond to a criticism by turning it back on the accuser.
Examples
Person A: "You shouldn't be smoking. It's bad for your health."
Person B: "You smoke too, so you can't tell me not to."
How to Avoid This
If you are criticized for something you also do, it's better to acknowledge the hypocrisy but still address the issue. 'You're right, I do smoke, and I'm trying to quit. But that doesn't change the fact that it's unhealthy.'
How to Counter This
Point out that your own actions don't invalidate your argument. 'Whether or not I am a hypocrite doesn't change the fact that smoking is harmful. Let's talk about the health risks.'
